Getting Started
New to boating on Canyon Lake? Work through these steps before your first time out. Some requirements need to be renewed each year or every 2 years — the summary below shows what's due when.
| Requirement | How often |
|---|---|
| Boat registration (Motorized) | Every year |
| Insurance | Every year |
| Safety Inspection | Every 2 years |
| California Boater Card (Boat Registration - Non-motorized) | Once — lifetime |
Step 1 — Learn the Lake Rules
Before registering your boat, taking your boater safety test, and heading out, familiarize yourself with the general lake rules, Canyon Lake rules of the road, speed and wake limits, safe boating operations, towing riders on the Main Lake and North Ski Area, almanac sunset and sunrise rules, warning flags, and basic boating etiquette for Canyon Lake.
- The Main Lake Ski Area is posted at 35 mph. The rest of the lake is no-wake.
- Three warning flags are used: green (no restrictions), yellow (no wake on Main Lake), red (Main Lake closed to boat traffic)
- Always check the current flag status before heading out

Step 2 — Get Your California Boater Card
Required once — lifetime. As of January 1, 2025, a California Boater Card is required for all motorized vessel operators regardless of age. You only need to do this once.
- Take a Boating Safety Exam from a qualified provider — visit californiaboatercard.com/courses for a list of providers
- Visit cbc.caseapp.tylerapp.com to complete your application
- Upload proof of boater education and make a payment
- Once approved, you will receive a 90-day temporary boater card by email. Your official boater card should arrive by mail within 30 days
- Register with California Boater Card at californiaboatercard.com/applynow. Follow the step-by-step instructions on this page
- Select, register with, and complete one of their approved online courses and exam
- A temporary California Boater Card will immediately be emailed to you from [email protected] upon successful completion of the course and exam (valid for 90 days)
- Print, save, and bring this to your safety inspection. A permanent California Boater Card will be sent by mail within 30 days
Step 3 — Pass the Boating Safety Test
Required every 2 years. You must pass the online boating safety test before scheduling your safety inspection with Marine Patrol. The test is required each time a safety inspection is needed. Print your results page — you will need to bring it to Marine Patrol.
- If you are unable to take the test online, a written exam can be given at the time of inspection
Step 4 — Get a Boat Safety Inspection
Required every 2 years. Your boat needs a safety inspection every other year. Marine Patrol also inspects all newly registered boats before their first launch.
- Pass the online boating safety test before your inspection and print your results page
- Bring your valid Canyon Lake POA Card, California Boater Card, current boat registration, and printed test results
- Walk in to Marine Patrol at Holiday Harbor (by trailer or boat) — no appointment needed, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week
- If you would prefer a dockside inspection at your dock, call 951-244-6841 x415 to schedule an appointment
- You will receive a boat safety certificate once everything is approved

Step 5 — Register Your Boat
Due every year. All motorized boats used on Canyon Lake must be registered with the POA annually. Only properties in good standing will be extended boat privileges.
- Complete the Canyon Lake POA Boat (Motorized) Registration Application or Non-Motorized Registration Application
- Keep your current State registration documents onboard at all times — they will be checked during safety inspections
- No boats over 21'6" in length or exceeding 6,000 pounds in dry weight are permitted on Canyon Lake

Keep Canyon Lake quagga-free
If your boat has been used in any other body of water, it must be inspected before you launch it here. Help protect the lake by having your boat checked upon returning to the community.
