Boat Safety Inspections
A boat safety inspection, conducted by Canyon Lake POA’s Marine Patrol, must be submitted when registering a new boat that requires state registration. It must be renewed every two years or when the boat is sold or ownership changes.
Inspection Information
Inspections at Marine Patrol Office — No Appointment Needed
Safety inspections at the Marine Patrol Office, located at the Holiday Harbor Launch Ramp, are available on a first-come, first-served basis for both trailered boats (drive-up) and boats moored along the south side of Holiday Harbor launch ramp (t-dock). Inspections are offered daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and no appointment is required.

What to Bring
For all safety inspections, the following must be provided by the Prime, Associate, or Tenant with privileges (who must also be present to initial the Boater Safety Certificate):
- Valid Canyon Lake POA Card
- California Boater Card
- Current boat registration
- Printed results from the online boating safety test
- All documents must match the name of the person present
Boat Safety Test
Before you come in for your inspection, you must first pass the online boating safety test. Print your results page — you will need to bring it to Marine Patrol.

Safety Inspection Checklist
In order to obtain a boat safety certificate, the items below will be verified at the time of inspection.
- Current State Registration
- State Numbering
- Sound Producing Device (horn or whistle)
- Coast Guard Approved PFD (Type II, III or V) — 2 and Throwable (Type IV) — 1
- Visual Distress Signal (Orange Flag)
- Alternate Propulsion (Paddle)
- Fenders
- Navigation Lights
- USCG Approved Fire Extinguisher (under 12 years old, 5-20B on 2018 and newer boats)
- Backfire Flame Arrester
- Fuel System
- Electrical System (covered and secured battery)
- Engine Sound Level
- Overall Vessel Condition
- Wake Enhancing Device
- Boat Safety Exam
- California Boater Card
